Pray for End to UK Riots

Consider setting your facebook status to: ‘Pray for those affected by UK Riots now,’ or adding this ‘Pray for London’ image to your page.

Stuart Radose who was reported by Sky News to have been burnt out of his home on Saturday, said: “It’s like you’re looking at reports from Syria. This is Tottenham, this is where we live, this is London. It’s like a war zone. We’ve lost everything. The only things that we have are the clothes on us.”

People from all over the UK have been contacting 24-7 Prayer asking for people to pray for those affected by severe rioting in London and Birmingham, particularly Tottenham in London, in the wake of a protest over a police shooting.

Here’s what you have been saying:

Lucy Carr from Wales wrote: ”I contacted you because I feel that this country does need prayer, lots of it. When something like this happens, uncertainty and fear is prevalent and the Devil can get a foothold. I just feel that this is a time when Christ’s presence needs to be felt across the nation, through His people. All over the country we can pray for peace, but on a more local level, perhaps those in the 24-7 network could pray for ideas to help those in their community who have been affected by the damage – physical and moral – that has been done in the last few days. People like Stuart Radose, who lived in the building burnt to the ground in Tottenham on Saturday night, could use some practical help.  When I heard his distress when listening to the news on Sunday morning before church, it pained me to think that he has lost everything and after tonight it seems there will be more like Stuart who have lost everything. Maybe they need food or shelter or clothes, or maybe they just need to know that God loves them even when the Devil is on the streets. My heart says that those innocent victims of the violence which has erupted in these last few days need to know that the Christian community is there for them, as a visible expression of Jesus’ love. I’m not sure how that could happen – maybe something as simple as opening up a church so people have a haven of peace to come to so they can reflect on the situation. Or maybe they could organise street clean-ups or food and clothing drives for those made homeless or whose livelihoods have been destroyed? Living in Wales, I can’t offer that sort of practical help but I can pray and I will continue to do so.”

Phil Togwell from 24-7 UK wrote on Facebook tonight: ‎”30+ hooded young people just ran across Romford ring road in front of me… police cars and vans whizzing around everywhere. Please pray…”

This rioting is on our doorstep in the UK. What are we going to do to help? Consider setting up a 24:1 prayer room with friends and registering it, or hash tagging your prayers on the 24-7 UK Facebook page or Tweet your prayer with these hashtags: #prayforlondon #prayforbirmingham and #prayforengland.

Lynn Roberts wrote on 24-7′s Facebook page:  ”Father in the name of Jesus we pray for peace to be restored to the UK for conviction for those who are involved in the rioting, for wisdom to those who are leading and guiding the Police and rescue efforts. Lord we pray that communities will come together in LOVE and respect for each other. Lord I pray your hand of protection upon families upon children and those who live in these localities. Father protect homes, businesses and turn this situation around for your glory.”

24-7 Prayer warrior, Wendy Everingham, said: “Lord Jesus we ask for your peace to come all over London. We pray that the violence stops right now in your powerful mighty Name we ask. These events are just evidence of the need for You in our City … show Your Hand I pray. Amen.”

Below are some prayer pointers from Steve Deeming, a 24-7-er who attends Church in North London, while Madeline Traies wrote on our facebook page:”It’s not just London, its happening In Birmingham too…”

Steve wrote:  ”As you maybe aware that London is currently in its third night of rioting and looting, I asked a friend from Tottenham who runs a church there what we could pray for the area, I’ve included his response below. Since he sent that email Hackney, Lewisham, Croydon, Catford and Peckham, Birmingham and Leeds have all seen mobs and riots break out.

Please stand with our city and pray for order to be restored. Some of the community is still angry about the shooting of Mark Duggan.

Here are some prayer pointers…

*Pray that the truth will come out and will be received with grace

*Pray too that the good work to build positive police-community relations will continue

*The issue that most people are impacted by is the damage caused by the violence on Saturday night and Sunday morning, so please pray for:

*Those made homeless as they rebuild their lives

*For businesses as they struggle with loss of trade, that major chains affected will stay in the areas.

*For people living in fear that they will know God’s peace

*That the church will be relevant, effective and practical in its response.”
