Angelique Gerber, one of this years 24-7 Transit students, reflects on her experiences of God Story. “When we read some of these incredible stories in the bible, we can relate so many of them to our own lives as we learn of people in all different journeys of their faith. As we remember these famous characters and share of the inspiration their stories bring, we are stirred to be more like some of them or learn from their mistakes.
God Story encouraged a new approach in our bible readings: when we began this “walk through the bible”, we were encouraged to read it from God’s point of view, reminding ourselves through each story to look at it from His angle. I never realized the impact it would actually have on me, but when I look back now, I would describe the experience of daring to ask your dad, “So whats your story? what things have you been through before I came along?”. So many times I would pray, “*God help me to get to know you more!” * and I never realized it was as simple as just listening to his full story (from the beginning to now) and really hearing his heart. When we get to know people and hear the painful things they have been through, we can understand them so much more – what hurts them and what brings them joy.
As we began with these readings and weekly discussions as a group, we were shaken by so many questions and found ourselves having to just lay it all down and let God rebuild our faith and how we see him! Like facing the reality of what God is actually like, shook my faith big time. It’s easy to ignore some of the frightening things in the Old Testament and just pack it away as if “God’s not like that anymore”. But when you recognize that God is actually still the same as he was yesterday, since the beginning and that he never changes who he is (Mal3:6; Heb13:8) – it is frightening to read through and discover some of things God did, especially when this is the Father you share this loving relationship with and whose hands your life is in! So like a child, we listened and as we listened to the stories of our Father, sharing of the joys of the people he created that he loved so much and then hearing the painful
rejection he faced over and over again… the anger and hurt he felt…
The God Story experience has been like listening to God’s “testimony” – what he’s been through and how he felt. Even the testimony of man’s life is powerfully transforming to hear… it unites people – you can’t help but join in their cry once you’ve listened to them pouring their heart out.”
